Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This 22-kilometer stage takes place over a soft and undulating terrain, leaving Palencia province behind to enter León province. The route passes through the "Cuesterilla of the Devil", a short stretch of toboggans, before smoothing out again. It goes through small villages such as Ledigos and Terradillos of the Templars. The route follows a landscape of cereal fields and oak woodlands. The stage ends in Sahagún, a town of immense historical and artistic importance, considered the heart of the French Way and cradle of Mudéjar art. Its heritage, with San Lorenzo and San Tirso churches, and the ruins of the Monastery of San Benito, is impressive.
The stage from Calzadilla de la Cueza to Sahagún is an enjoyable 22 km stretch that marks the transition from Palentine lands to Leonesian ones. The terrain, although still predominantly flat, presents some gentle undulations that break the monotony of previous stages.

The route runs on comfortable earth tracks, passing through small towns in the Land of Campos. The first is Ledigos, followed by Terradillos de los Templarios, whose name evokes the presence of the Order of the Temple in these lands. Further along, one arrives at San Nicolás del Real Camino, the last town in Palencia.

The final stretch of the stage, now in the province of León, includes a pass through the Virgin of the Bridge hermitage before crossing the River Valderaduey and entering Sahagún. This village is one of the most important points on the entire Camino Francés. In medieval times, its Monastery of San Benito, driven by monks from Cluny, was one of the most powerful in all of the peninsula.

Although only ruins remain today at the monastery, and the imposing Arch of San Benito, Sahagún is considered the cradle of Mudéjar art. The churches of San Tirso and San Lorenzo, with their slender brick towers, are two masterpieces of this style. The Pilgrim Sanctuary and the rest of its historic quarter complete an exceptional cultural offer. Sahagún, often considered half of the Camino Francés, is a mandatory stop for rest and cultural enjoyment.
