Stage Description

Leaving behind the monumental Cordoba, this stage marks the beginning of the ascent to Sierra Morena. It is a transitional day that leaves the plains of the countryside for an undermountain landscape and heathland. The route is a continuous and demanding climb, especially in its final stretch. The pilgrim can enjoy spectacular views of the city of Cordoba as they gain height. Arrival at Cerro Muriano, a village with a strong mining past, offers a well-deserved rest in a mountain setting.
Leaving Cordoba by the north involves facing the first foothills of Sierra Morena, and this stage is a good example of it. The profile is a nearly constant ascent that puts the pilgrim's endurance to the test from the very beginning. The route leaves the Guadalquivir valley behind and ventures into a completely different landscape. The first part of the stage passes through the outskirts of the city, but soon the path becomes a mountain trail. As one ascends, views of Cordoba and its countryside become increasingly impressive. The path passes by the archaeological site of Medina Azahara, the luxurious califal city, whose visit is highly recommended. The final stretch is the most demanding, with an exigent climb up to Cerro Muriano. This town, situated right in the heart of the mountain range, originated from copper mine exploitation since Roman times. Today it's a peaceful village that offers the pilgrim a well-deserved rest and the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air of the mountains. Its basic services are sufficient for replenishing strength.
