Stage Description
This long journey unifies several traditional stages to bring the pilgrim from Redondela to the final destination. The route passes through Pontevedra, Caldas de Reis and Padrón, landmarks of the Portuguese Way. It is a demanding section due to its distance, with an undulating profile typical of Galicia. The pilgrim will pass by the charming historic center of Pontevedra, the thermal waters of Caldas and the legendary Padrón. The final stage is pure emotion, with the increasing proximity of the towers of the Cathedral. It's a stage for very prepared pilgrims who wish to arrive in Santiago on a last and marathon-like journey.
Unifying Redondela and Santiago de Compostela in a single day is a considerable challenge, reserved for pilgrims who are in top physical condition or those who, like cyclists, cover longer distances. This "superetapa" condenses the essence of the last kilometers of the Portuguese Way.
From Redondela, the path ascends gently before descending to Arcade, famous for its oysters, where it crosses the medieval Pontesampaio bridge over the Verdugo River. The next section is a tough uphill climb on an old unpaved road that tests one's strength before entering a smoother stretch towards Pontevedra.
Pontevedra, with its wonderful historic pedestrian center, is a mandatory stop. After resting, the path continues north through rural Galicia into a more leisurely day through Caldas de Reis, the thermal town.
From Caldas, the route follows to Padrón, the cradle of Jacobean tradition, a place loaded with symbolism. The final stretch from Padrón to Santiago is an emotionally charged journey, passing by Iria Flavia and small villages, with the silhouette of the Cathedral appearing on the horizon. Entering the Praza do Obradoiro is the culmination of a day of immense physical effort and an incomparable spiritual reward.
