Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This 25.8 km stage brings the pilgrim to the monumental city of Burgos. The first part runs through a low mountain landscape and forests, passing by the small town of Agés. The route crosses the Sierra de Atapuerca, a place of immense value for humanity due to its paleontological deposits, declared World Heritage Site. From the top of the mountain, the first views of Burgos are obtained. The final stretch is a long descent and an approach to the city that runs along its industrial and residential periphery, an effort that is widely rewarded with entry into the historic center and the view of its majestic Gothic Cathedral, one of the universal art's jewels.
The journey from San Juan de Ortega to Burgos is a stage packed with history and anticipation. Its 25.8 km begin in the tranquil surroundings of the monastery, then venture back into the Castilian landscape. After passing through Agés and Atapuerca, the route faces the ascent to the Sierra de Atapuerca. This place is worldwide known for housing some of the most important fossil human sites in the world, which have revolutionized the study of human evolution. Although the Camino does not pass directly by the caves, the energy of the location is palpable.

From the top of the mountain, at over 1,000 meters above sea level, the pilgrim gets their first and distant views of the city of Burgos, an exciting moment that gives strength to continue. From here, a long descent begins. Passes through various towns such as Villalval, Cardeñuela Riopico and Orbaneja Riopico, where the Camino offers two alternatives for reaching Burgos.

The entrance to the great city is the least appreciated part of the journey, since it involves crossing industrial areas and peripheral neighborhoods. It's a necessary toll that tests the pilgrim's patience, but the final reward is immense. After crossing the Arlanzón river, the path enters the historic center through the Arch of Santa María, an ancient gate of the wall converted into a stone altar. And suddenly, it opens up before the eyes the vastness of the Plaza del Rey San Fernando, dominated by the facade of the Cathedral of Santa María de Burgos, one of the world's greatest Gothic works and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The vision of its majesty makes all the effort worthwhile.
