Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This 22.1 km stage marks the transition between La Rioja and Castile and León, entering Burgos province. The landscape continues to be dominated by cereal fields on a terrain of gentle undulations with no major difficulties. The route passes through a series of small Castilian towns with charm, such as Grañón, the last Riojan town and famous for its parochial hostel's hospitality, Redecilla del Camino, the first Burgalian town, and Viloria de Rioja, the birthplace of Saint Dominic. The journey is tranquil and allows the pilgrim to fully immerse themselves in the rural atmosphere of Castile before arriving at Belorado, an animated village with a beautiful main square and complete services for rest.
The journey between Santo Domingo de la Calzada and Belorado is a transitional stage that takes the pilgrim from La Rioja to the vast territories of Castilla and León. The 22.1 km route is comfortable, with no major inclines, and traverses an open landscape that foretells the imminent arrival at the Meseta.

Just after leaving Santo Domingo, Grañón, the last town in La Rioja on the Camino, is reached. It's famous for its parochial hostel in the church of San Juan Bautista, a very special place of welcome. Immediately afterwards, a simple wooden cross marks the provincial boundary and welcomes Burgos. The first Burgalian town is Redecilla del Camino, which stands out by its Romanesque baptismal font from the 12th century.

The route continues through a series of small Castilian towns, such as Castildelgado and Viloria de Rioja, the birthplace of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Each town offers a haven of peace and the opportunity to observe traditional regional architecture, with robust churches and adobe houses. The landscape is predominantly agricultural, with dirt tracks that wind through fields of cereal, sunflowers or legumes.

The final stage ends in Belorado, a village with more amenities available. Its porticoed Plaza Mayor, the church of Santa María and the caves of its old castle are some of its attractions. Belorado is a perfect place to rest and prepare for the stages of the Meseta that are about to come.
