The Town

Discover Baiona

Baiona, one of the maritime villages with the most history in Galicia, is a stop of exceptional interest on the Portuguese Way of the Coast. Its historical importance is universal, as it was the first European port to receive news of the Discovery of America upon the arrival of the caravel La Pinta in 1493. A replica of the ship can be visited at its port, being a major attraction. For pilgrims, Baiona offers a beautiful setting, with an old town declared a Historic Artistic Interest Grouping and the impressive Fortaleza de Monterreal, now a National Parador, whose walk around its walls offers stunning views of Vigo Bay and the Cíes Islands. The village is an important tourist center and service hub, with lively life, excellent seafood restaurants to enjoy the Rías Baixas seafood and a good network of accommodations for pilgrims. It's a stage that perfectly combines the beauty of Galician coast with a deep lesson in history, a cultural and pleasant break on the Jacobean route towards Santiago de Compostela.
