Discover Friburgo
Fribourg (Fribourg in French), capital of the canton of the same name, is one of Switzerland's most beautiful medieval cities and a major stop on the Jacob's Way. Its uniqueness lies in its bilingual character (French and German) and its spectacular location, situated on a rocky promontory surrounded by a bend of the Saane River. For pilgrims, arriving at Fribourg is like traveling back in time. The old town is magnificently preserved, with over 200 Gothic facades, historic fountains, and wooden bridges. The imposing St Nicholas Cathedral, with its 74-meter-high tower to which one can ascend, dominates the city and offers breathtaking views. A funicular that operates using the city's wastewater is another of its curiosities. With a good range of accommodations and a quiet university atmosphere, it is a culturally enriching stop. In the Way of St James, Fribourg is a jewel showing the historical richness and cultural diversity of the Swiss Confederation.
