Discover Greccio

Greccio, a picturesque village hanging off the slope of a mountain in the Holy Valley of Rieti, is worldwide famous for being the birthplace of the Nativity tradition. It was here, on Christmas Day 1223, where Saint Francis of Assisi, wanting to revive with maximum simplicity Jesus' birth, organized the first living Nativity representation in a nearby cave. For the pilgrim of the Via di Francesco, visiting Greccio's Sanctuary is a moment of great tenderness and spirituality. The sanctuary, built next to the original grotto, preserves the medieval chapel and a museum of nativity scenes from around the world. The place invites reflection and meditation on the humility of the Franciscan message. The village of Greccio, with its stone houses, offers stunning views of the Holy Valley. It's an stage that connects the walker to one of Christianity's most beloved traditions, an experience that enriches the journey with a deep sense of Christmas and evangelical simplicity.
