Discover Monasterio de San Salvador de Urdax
The Monastery of San Salvador of Urdax, although part of the village of Urdazubi/Urdax, deserves special mention as a fundamental landmark on the Route of Baztán. This ancient monastery, belonging to the premonstratensian order, has its origins in the 9th century and was one of the most important pilgrim hospitals along the Pyrenean route. Its imposing structure, with its church, cloister, and an old mill that still functions, is the historical and spiritual heart of the town. For the pilgrim, a visit to the monastery is a moment of connection with the long tradition of hospitality that has characterized this Jacobean route. The sobriety of its architecture and the peace breathed in its interior invite contemplation. It is a testament to the importance that monastic orders had in protecting and promoting pilgrimages to Santiago. Walking through its rooms is following the footsteps of thousands of pilgrims who found refuge and solace here after crossing the border. It is a stop that enriches culturally and spiritually the experience of the Way of St James in Navarre.
