The Town

Discover O Pino (Valga)

O Pino is a hamlet in the Pontevedra municipality of Valga, set on the Portuguese Way halfway between Caldas de Reis and Padrón. Walkers know it because the public pilgrim hostel of Valga stands here, making it possible to split a stage of almost nineteen kilometres in two.

The setting is thoroughly rural: the path arrives from Carracedo through woods, small streams and scattered hamlets, and then continues towards San Miguel de Valga and Pontecesures, on the banks of the Ulla. There are no notable monuments in the hamlet itself; its value lies in the landscape and the calm of the place. The municipality of Valga is also the birthplace of Carolina Otero, La Bella Otero, the celebrated dancer of the Belle Époque.

Pilgrims find the hostel and little else: barely a bar or two in the vicinity. Apart from the hostel there is no accommodation in the hamlet, and the rural guest houses in the area lie several kilometres off the route.

O Pino is a simple, silent stop, the last pause in the province of Pontevedra before crossing the Ulla into the province of A Coruña.
