Rates

Rates, or São Pedro de Rates, is a locality of great historical importance on the Central Portuguese Way. Its main treasure is the Monastery of São Pedro, one of Portugal's most emblematic Romanesque constructions. The church, with its carved capitals and sober beauty, transports the pilgrim to the Middle Ages. It is believed that here Saint James the Apostle preached and that his disciple, Saint Peter of Rates, was the first bishop of Braga. This legacy makes the village a point of deep spiritual connection. For the walker, it is one of the first monumental stops after leaving Oporto, offering a quiet atmosphere and basic services for an enriched rest by art and Jacobean history.
