Discover Sagunto
Sagunto (Sagunt), a city with over two thousand years of history on the Mediterranean coast, is the starting point of the Camino de Sagunto, a route that ventures into the interior to connect with other Jacobean routes such as the Castellano-Aragonese. Starting the pilgrimage here is doing it from a place with an extraordinary monumental heritage. Its Roman legacy is its main attraction, with a spectacular Roman Theatre excavated on the slope of the mountain. Dominating the city, its immense Castle, with Iberian, Roman, medieval and Arab vestiges, invites a tour through the history of the civilizations that inhabited these lands. The pilgrim can explore the old town, with its Jewish quarter and churches, before embarking on the journey. Sagunto is a great centre for services, perfect for preparing for a long and demanding route that traverses contrasting landscapes, from the Valencian wetlands to the hills of Teruel. It's a start to the pilgrimage that offers a deep immersion in ancient history as a prelude to the spiritual journey towards Santiago.
