Sarzana is a vibrant fortified city at the border between Liguria and Tuscany, an important stop on the Francigena Way. Its rich past is evident in its two imposing fortresses, the Fortezza di Sarzanello and the Fortezza Firmafede. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta houses one of Italy's oldest painted crosses.
