Tarragona, the ancient Roman capital of Hispania Citerior, is a monumental starting point for a branch of the Catalan Way (Camí de Sant Jaume). Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the city offers the pilgrim an introduction to Jacobean route immersed in classical history. Its Roman legacy is spectacular, with the Amphitheatre overlooking the Mediterranean, the Roman Circus integrated into urban fabric and imposing walls. For the walker, starting the pilgrimage in Tarragona is following the footsteps of the Roman Via Augusta, which coincides in part with the Jacobean route. The Cathedral of Saint Tecla, a transition from Romanesque to Gothic, is the spiritual heart of the city. With a complete range of services and excellent maritime cuisine, it's a perfect place to prepare for the adventure. The path begins towards the interior, seeking Lleida, on a journey that goes from the Mediterranean coast to the interior plains. It's an introduction combining the grandeur of the Roman Empire with the millenary tradition of the Way of St James.
