Discover Valdeorras
The Valdeorras region, with O Barco as its capital, is the entry point to Galicia for pilgrims who choose the Winter Way, the historic alternative to avoid the snows of O Cebreiro. This land, watered by the Sil River, offers a singular landscape beauty, marked by hills covered in vineyards where Godello and Mencía grape varieties are cultivated, leading to renowned wines. Viticulture here is often heroic, with vines planted on steep terraces. The Roman legacy is also palpable in the region, with remains of the Via Nova and ancient gold mining operations. For pilgrims, Valdeorras represents an immersion into a different Galicia, less rainy and with a particular microclimate. The Way of St James crosses the region following the Sil River course, offering an interest landscape and enological route. It is the start of the Galician stage that combines nature, history and wine culture, providing an authentic and memorable experience before venturing into Ribeira Sacra.
