The Town
Discover Vila Nova de Cerveira
Founded by King Dinis, who granted it a charter in 1321, it preserves its medieval castle at the top of the old quarter, with walls overlooking the river. The town is known as the "Vila das Artes" for its International Art Biennial, held since 1978, which has left sculptures scattered through streets and gardens. The most recognisable is the iron stag crowning the hill above the town, the work of sculptor José Rodrigues. By the river are the Aquamuseu do Rio Minho and the international bridge linking it with Galicia.
Pilgrims find a well-kept pedestrian centre with accommodation in several categories, restaurants and every service, as well as a pleasant riverside walk.
Vila Nova de Cerveira is the stop with the most character on the Minho stretch, halfway between the coast and Valença.
