Vilaserío

Vilaserío is a small hamlet in the parish of San Pedro de Bugallido, in the municipality of Negreira (A Coruña) and the district of A Barcala, which the Camino de Fisterra passes through some thirteen kilometres after Negreira. On the pilgrim route it is one of the usual intermediate overnight stops on the long day to Olveiroa, more than thirty-three kilometres: those who prefer not to tackle it in one go find here the place to break it into two more manageable sections. The village, with barely more than fifty inhabitants, lies at around 340 metres above sea level, on the edge of the uplands that separate the Barcala valley from the Xallas plateau. It is reached after the hardest part of the day, a steady climb along the old Royal Road to Fisterra through oaks, chestnuts and pine woods, passing Zas and A Pena. Farmhouses, meadows and small vegetable plots make up a settlement without notable monuments, whose parish church is San Pedro de Bugallido. For the pilgrim, Vilaserío means rest on a stretch with very few services: the municipal albergue occupies the old school at the edge of the village, and a bar and other private lodgings also operate beside the Way. The next day the route continues through O Cornado and As Maroñas towards Monte Aro. A humble, quiet stop, it sums up the rural and solitary character of the Camino to Fisterra.
