Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
A gentle and pleasant coastal stage that follows the Rías Baixas shoreline from the historic town of Baiona to Nigrán. The profile is practically flat, with only minor undulations, making it an ideal day to begin this coastal variant of the Camino Portugués. The path offers spectacular views of the Cíes Islands and the Atlantic, alternating between seafront promenades and trails bordering beaches such as Ladeira and Patos. The atmosphere is relaxed and the sea breeze accompanies the pilgrim throughout the day. Nigrán is a quiet municipality with good services and excellent seafood cuisine.
The stage between Baiona and Nigrán is a low-difficulty coastal day that allows the pilgrim to fully enjoy the Atlantic landscape of the Rías Baixas. The path leaves the town of Baiona, where according to tradition the first news of the discovery of America arrived, and follows the coastline northward.
The route is mostly flat, running along seafront promenades, coastal trails, and small shore roads. The views are magnificent: on one side, the Atlantic Ocean with the silhouettes of the Cíes Islands on the horizon; on the other, gentle hills covered in Atlantic vegetation.
Beaches of great beauty are crossed, such as Ladeira beach, one of the most extensive in the area, and Patos beach, known among surfers for its good waves. The path also passes by the estuary of the River Miñor, a natural area of great ecological value where seabirds can be observed.
The arrival in Nigrán is peaceful. This coastal municipality offers all the services a pilgrim needs: accommodation, restaurants with excellent seafood and fresh fish, and pharmacies. It is a perfect place to rest and prepare for the next stage towards Vigo.
