Stage Description

The first stage of the Bayona Way is an enjoyable walk that takes the pilgrim out of historic Bayonne. The route follows for the most part the course of the Nive river in a flat and beautiful terrain. The route goes through the Basque-French countryside, with its green meadows and traditional farmhouses. Arrival at Ustaritz, a town with great charm and an important heritage, offers a peaceful and picturesque final stage.
The Via de Bayona begins in the historic city of Bayonne, an important port in French Basque Country. This first stage is a pleasant 22-kilometer walk that serves as a transition from the town to the serene countryside. The path largely follows the course of the Nive River, offering a flat and relaxed profile, ideal for pilgrims to acclimate. It passes through idyllic landscapes of green meadows and traditional Basque-French farmhouses (`baserris`), with their wooden facades. The route is dotted with small rural nuclei with charm, in a peaceful environment that contrasts with the bustle of the city. The final day ends in Ustaritz, a town with a rich history, which was an important administrative center for the Laburdi region. Its picturesque charm, its church of Saint Vincent, and its tranquil atmosphere make for a perfect finale to a first encounter with Basque interior culture, preparing the pilgrim for the following mountainous stages.
