Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

Stage of the Route of Father Sarmiento, maritime and land pilgrimage through the Rías Baixas inspired by the travels of the Benedictine friar Martín Sarmiento (18th century). Departure from Cambados, capital of Albariño wine and historical site with the spectacular Praza de Fefiñáns. The route crosses the bridge of A Illa, the only land link of the island with the mainland, to A Illa de Arousa, inhabited island of the National Park of the Atlantic Islands with pristine beaches and rich seafood tradition.
The stage from São João da Madeira to Porto is a 33km long journey that gently descends into the monumental city of Porto. The route starts at São João da Madeira (150m) and follows a predominantly descending profile, with some undulations, until the city of Porto (10m). The route passes through a rural and solitary landscape which contrasts with the approaching great city. It is an enjoyable walk that allows you to appreciate the scenery and arrive in time to explore the destination city. Arrival in Porto, with its impressive historic center, UNESCO World Heritage Site, and famous wine cellars, is a spectacular final stage. This stage combines gentle exercise with rich historical experience, a perfect balance on the Portuguese Way.
