Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
This long stage enters the Leonesese high plateaus. The path runs along a dirt trail that advances in a straight line, parallel to the road, through an endless landscape of horizons. It is a transition phase, with few intermediate towns. The route offers the pilgrim an experience of solitude and meditation. The final stage ends in the historic village of Mansilla de las Mulas, an important medieval stronghold that preserves much of its impressive stone wall.
The stage between Sahagún and Mansilla de las Mulas is a very representative long journey of the León highlands. The road is a long straight stretch of land with little inclines that crosses an overwhelming landscape of austerity and beauty. The fields of cereal extend to infinity, and the feeling of loneliness and vastness is the dominant note. One passes through towns such as El Burgo Ranero and Reliegos. As one approaches the end of the stage, the landscape begins to be a bit greener thanks to the proximity of the River Esla. The arrival in Mansilla de las Mulas is the culmination point of the day. This historic village welcomes the pilgrim with its imposing medieval bridge over the River Esla. Mansilla preserves much of its medieval wall, built with stone blocks, as well as some of its entrance gates.
