Stage Description
This stage marks the end of the Meseta and the expected arrival at one of the major capitals on the Camino Francés: León. The route is predominantly flat, but the landscape changes dramatically as you leave rural surroundings to enter urban periphery. Despite the potentially tedious final kilometers, the reward is immense. The entry into the historic old town of León and the view of its majestic Gothic Cathedral, the "Pulchra Leonina", is one of the most exciting moments on the pilgrimage.
The stage from Mansilla de las Mulas to León is a transition day that takes the pilgrim from the heart of the Meseta to one of Spain's most splendid cities. The road is mainly flat and, in large part, urban. The route leaves Mansilla and passes through Puente Villarente, with its medieval origin bridge. From here on, the landscape becomes increasingly industrial and suburban. This final stretch can be monotonous. However, the growing anticipation of arriving at a destination so rich in history and art alleviates the walk. The entrance to León is made through the Puente Castro neighborhood. The road leads the pilgrim directly to the heart of the city. Effort is forgotten upon approaching the old town and encountering the majesty of Santa María de Regla Cathedral, known as "Pulchra Leonina", one of the world's masterpieces in Gothic architecture. But León is more than that: San Isidoro Basilica, Gaudí's Casa Botines, and the lively tapestry of Barrio Húmedo.
