Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
This long stage combines coastal stretches with interior trails. The route passes through a beautiful landscape, with forests, fields of cultivation and constant proximity to the sea. It's an demanding day due to distance but without major drops. The path goes through small villages before arriving at the jewel of the stage: Viana do Castelo. This beautiful city, at the confluence of the Lima River, is one of the most beautiful in northern Portugal. Its historic quarter, its port and above all, the imposing Sanctuary of Saint Lucy that crowns it, make it an unforgettable stop and a great reward for the day's effort.
The stage that connects Esposende with Viana do Castelo is a long but exceptional journey. The route combines sections through the interior, through forests and rural areas, with spectacular stretches along the coast.
The trail starts in Esposende and enters a landscape of rolling fields and gentle hills. Several small villages are crossed, where traditional Portuguese Minho architecture can be appreciated. The terrain is a continuous rise and fall, but without extreme slopes.
The second part of the stage returns to the coast, offering stunning views of the ocean. Walking along paths that border cliffs and crossing several beautiful beaches.
Arrival in Viana do Castelo is the highlight. The city is situated in a privileged location, at the mouth of the Lima River and protected by the Monte de Santa Luzia. Its historic center is a maze of charming streets with Renaissance and Manueline buildings. The Praça da República, with its fountain and historical buildings, is the heart of the city.
It's essential to climb, either on foot or by funicular, to the Sanctuary of Santa Luzia. From its dome, some of the most famous and spectacular panoramic views in all of Portugal can be obtained, with the city, river, and ocean at your feet. Viana do Castelo is a mandatory stop, a city that charms every pilgrim.
