Stage Description

The shortest stage of this section, barely eight almost flat kilometres, leads from Foligno to Spello across the Valle Umbra. It is a comfortable walk, ideal as a transition day, crossing the countryside among crops and rural lanes with gentle rises as it approaches Spello. The destination, of Roman origin, preserves walls, gates and remains of the ancient Hispellum, and is famous for its flower-decked streets and the Infiorate of Corpus Christi. At the gates of Assisi, Spello is the perfect prelude to the final stretch towards the city of Saint Francis.
The stage from Foligno to Spello is the shortest of this section of the Via di Francesco: barely eight almost flat kilometres crossing the Valle Umbra. Its slight difficulty makes it an ideal transition day, comfortable even for those linking several days of walking.

The route leaves Foligno and crosses the Umbrian countryside among fields, market gardens and rural lanes, with the backdrop of the mountains that close off the valley. The terrain is practically flat until the outskirts of Spello, where a gentle rise leads up to the town, set on the slopes of Monte Subasio.

Spello, the ancient Roman Hispellum, preserves walls, monumental gates and vestiges of its imperial past, as well as a medieval centre of cobbled streets and pink-stone houses. It is famous for its balconies and alleys adorned with flowers and, above all, for the Infiorate of Corpus Christi, when the streets are covered with floral carpets. At the gates of Assisi, Spello forms the perfect prelude to the final stretch towards the city of Saint Francis.
