Stage Description
This stage enters the heart of Las Encartaciones, in a medium mountain terrain. The profile is demanding, with several ascents and descents. The route passes through the historic village of Balmaseda, the first town of Biscay, with its iconic medieval bridge, an obligatory stop. After Balmaseda, the road continues over a increasingly rural and mountainous landscape, following the course of the Cadagua river. The arrival at the small village of Nava de Ordunte, on the border with Burgos, is a tranquil final stage in a privileged natural environment.
The journey between Güeñes and Nava de Ordunte is a stage of great beauty that traverses the Cadagua valley. The profile is undulating, with a progressive ascent. The most important milestone of the day is arrival in Balmaseda, the first town founded in Biscay. Its medieval historic core, with its Old Bridge or of the Muz, San Severino church and palaces, is of exceptional beauty. It is essential to dedicate time to explore it. After Balmaseda, the path continues ascending the valley, in a more and more rural and mountainous environment. The landscape is of great beauty, with oak and beech forests. The final stage ends in the small village of Nava de Ordunte, already in the Burgalian municipality of the Mena Valley. It is a place of absolute tranquility, perfect for the pilgrim's rest.
