Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This final stage marks the approach to the large city of Lugo. The profile is mainly descending and much smoother than previous stages, allowing for a faster and more relaxed walk. The route passes through a very pleasant rural landscape. The final stretch becomes increasingly urban as it approaches Lugo. The entry into the city and the first contact with its impressive Roman Wall, declared a World Heritage Site and perfectly preserved, is an unforgettable moment and one of the greatest rewards of the Primitivo Way.
The journey from O Padrón to Lugo is long, but fortunately the profile is much more favorable than in previous days, with a general descending trend. It's an era of transition that leaves the mountains for the Lucense plain. The road runs through a beautiful rural landscape, alternating dirt tracks, "corridors" and asphalt sections on secondary roads. You pass by numerous small villages, such as Castroverde, which has the remains of a castle. A notable point of interest is the village of Souto de Torres, where you can take a small detour to admire the "Souto da Retorta" in Chavín, a forest that houses "O Avó" (The Grandfather), an eucalyptus tree over 60 meters tall. As the road approaches Lugo, the surroundings become increasingly urbanized. However, all the effort is rewarded many times when arriving at the historic center. The entrance to Lugo is made through the Porta de San Pedro, one of the gates of its spectacular Roman Wall. This fortification, dating back to the 3rd century, surrounds the entire historic center and can be walked around entirely. It's the only intact Roman wall in the world, an unique experience.
