Stage Description

This long stage connects the Vasco-Interior Way with the French Way. The route is demanding, with a broken profile that crosses the Obarenes Mountains. It's a day of great beauty and solitude, which unfolds through a landscape of forests and mountains. After crossing the mountainous zone, the path descends to La Rioja. The arrival at Santo Domingo de la Calzada, one of the most emblematic cities of the French Way, with its cathedral and the legend of the rooster and hen, marks the end of the adventure in the interior of Vasco and the reintegration into the main route.
The stage connecting Miranda de Ebro to Santo Domingo de la Calzada is the last of the Vasco-Interior Camino and one of the most demanding. The pilgrim faces the crossing of the Montes Obarenes, on a mountain day of great beauty and solitude. The path ascends progressively through forests of oaks and beeches. Beyond the mountain zone, a long descent begins towards the La Rioja Alta comarca. The landscape changes, and the forests make way for vineyards. Arrival in Santo Domingo de la Calzada is a moment of great symbolism. Here, the Vasco-Interior Camino pilgrim joins the bustling Camino Francés. The city is one of the enclaves with the most history and legend on the Jacobean route. Its Cathedral, housing a live rooster and hen in memory of the famous miracle, its pilgrims' hospital, and well-preserved old town make it an indispensable stop. It's the perfect end to an demanding route and a welcome to the main current of pilgrimage.
