Stage Description

A short, essentially flat stage that lets cyclists split the classic Laredo-Santander day while enjoying the bay of Santona. The ride starts at Laredo harbour, where the passenger boat crosses to Santona in a few minutes with bikes on board; from there the route skirts Berria beach, clears the small rise of Argonos and rolls into Noja between marshes and meadows. Those who prefer to avoid the ferry can ride around the Santona marshes via Colindres and Escalante, a road alternative of about 26 kilometres. The sands of Ris and Trengandin and Noja's summer atmosphere round off a day made for unhurried riding beside the Cantabrian Sea.
The cycling stage between Laredo and Noja is the first half of the split of the classic Laredo-Santander day: barely 17.5 practically flat kilometres inviting an unhurried ride around the bay of Santona. The only notable climb is the small rise of Argonos, under 40 metres.

From Laredo harbour, the passenger boat crosses the inlet in about ten minutes to Santona, bikes on board; the service runs continuously in summer. Santona, a seafaring town famous for its anchovies and the fort of San Martin, deserves a stroll before setting off again.

Leaving Santona, the route skirts Berria beach, an open Cantabrian strand between Mount Buciero and the marshes. A gentle ramp leads to Argonos and, among meadows and crop fields, Noja is reached along Trengandin beach.

Riders who prefer to skip the boat can circle the Marismas de Santona, Victoria y Joyel Natural Park via Colindres and Escalante: some 26 kilometres of quiet roads through one of northern Spain's most valuable wetlands. Waiting in Noja are the beaches of Ris and Trengandin and a full range of services.
