Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

The last stage of the Via de Bayonne is a pleasant walk that brings the pilgrim to the mythical Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. The route has a gentle profile, with a landscape of hills and valleys. Arrival at Saint-Jean, with its fortress, walls, and pilgrim atmosphere, marks the end of this great French route and the starting point of the Camino Francés in Spain. An unforgettable finale to a long adventure.
The last stage before the Great Pyrenees challenge is a 10km hike loaded with anticipation. The trail starts in Ostabat and enters a landscape of gentle hills, with the impressive peaks of the Pyrenees as a backdrop. It's an enjoyable stroll, without difficulties, that allows the pilgrim to mentally prepare for the demands of the next day. The route runs through a grassland environment, oak woodlands, and small farmhouses. Emotion builds up as it approaches Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, the medieval village that is the starting point of the French Way. Arrival at "the capital of the Camino" and its bustling Rue de la Citadelle marks the end of this stage. The atmosphere, with pilgrims from all over the world preparing for their journey, is overwhelming and magical. It's a mandatory stop for those initiating their pilgrimage, a place to replenish strength and stamp the credential in the pilgrim's office before crossing the mythical border.
