Discover Ostabat-Asme

Ostabat-Asme, a small village in the heart of French Basque Country, holds a mythical place in pilgrimage history. It is the major crossroads of the Jacobean route in France, the point where, according to the "Codex Calixtinus", the three great routes converged: the Vía Turonensis (from Paris/Tours), the Vía Lemovicensis (from Vézelay) and the Vía Podiensis (from Le Puy-en-Velay). For the medieval pilgrim, reaching Ostabat was a moment of great importance, where the road became a single and overflowing human river before facing the Pyrenees crossing. Today, the Gibraltar's trail, outside the village, commemorates this historic convergence. Although it is a small town, its atmosphere is filled with Jacobean history. Its traditional houses, Saint-Nicolas chapel and the hospitality of its people keep the pilgrim spirit alive. With several hostels, it is a fundamental stop for resting and sharing experiences before the final stage in France, which leads to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. It symbolizes the unity and universality of the Way of St. James.
