Stage Description

This stage is a long and spectacular descent from the Cantabrian Mountains to the low valleys. The road follows for the most part the course of the River Besaya, passing through a landscape of great beauty. The route runs along stretches of the ancient Roman road that connected the Meseta with the coast, which gives it a great historical value. It is an demanding journey for the knees due to the continuous descent, but very rewarding for its forest and river gorge landscapes. The arrival in Bárcena de Pie de Concha, a small village at the bottom of the valley, is well-deserved rest.
The journey between Reinosa and Bárcena de Pie de Concha is one of the most spectacular in the Calzada de los Blendios. The profile is a near-continuous descent, which takes the pilgrim from the high mountain of Campoo to the interior valleys of Cantabria. The road follows for the most part the course of the Besaya River, enclosed in a beautiful valley. What stands out about this stage is that it covers well-preserved sections of the ancient Roman road that gives the route its name. Walking on these ancient stones is an unforgettable experience. The landscape is breathtakingly beautiful, with beech and oak forests, and views of the valley. The descent is prolonged and can be difficult for joints, so it's recommended to take it calmly. Arrival in Bárcena de Pie de Concha, a small rural town with great charm, marks the end of the stage. Its tranquil atmosphere and natural surroundings make it an ideal place to rest.
