Stage Description

The first stage of the Via di San Francesco is an urban walk that allows pilgrims to bid farewell to Rome's city center and venture into the northern neighborhoods, following the course of the Aniene River. It is a transitional day, leaving the capital's bustle in search of the tranquility of the outskirts. The path is flat and easy, ideal for an initial encounter with the route. Arrival at Monte Sacro, a hill with history, marks the end of one stage that signals the beginning of the pilgrimage.
The inaugural stage of the Via di San Francesco from Rome is a 15.4 km urban journey that allows for a gradual departure from "Eternal City". The path starts at St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican and traverses the city to the north, largely following the course of the Tiber River and then the Aniene. It is a walk that combines the grandeur of Rome with everyday life in its neighborhoods. The route passes by places of interest such as the Ponte Milvio. The profile is completely flat. The arrival at Monte Sacro (59 m), a neighborhood with an important hill in ancient Roman history, marks the end of the first stage. It is a stage that serves for the pilgrim to bid farewell to the center of Christianity and begin his journey interior and physical towards the land of St Francis, a transition from the bustle of the capital to the promise of more tranquil landscapes that will come.
