Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

Cycling stage that follows the valley of the river Tera to the west, progressively entering the region of Sanabria. The 22 km link Santa Croya with Puebla de Sanabria, crossing an increasingly wooded landscape of oak and chestnut trees. Puebla de Sanabria is a historic-artistic site with an intact medieval town crowned by the castle of the Counts of Benavente (15th century), near the Natural Park of Lake Sanabria, the largest glacial lake in the Iberian Peninsula.
Leaving behind the Sierra Morena, this stage enters into the Extremaduran plain. The route is an enjoyable stroll over flat terrain, between pastures and fields of cultivation. It's a day to enjoy the tranquility of the countryside. Arrival in Fuente de Cantos, the birthplace of painter Zurbarán, is a charming final leg. It's a transitional stage that brings the pilgrim closer to the monumental city of Zafra.
