Stage Sarria to Ventas de Narón

This stage of the Camino Francés, linking Sarria with Ventas de Narón, is one of the most vibrant and complete stages of the Galician route. At almost 30 kilometres, it is a rewarding physical challenge that condenses the essence of the pilgrimage. Setting out from Sarria, the nerve centre where many begin their journey to obtain the Compostela, the way enters lush chestnut and oak woods (carballeiras) and green meadows. The first major landmark is the descent to the river Miño to cross the modern bridge into Portomarín, a historic town moved stone by stone. After visiting the fortress-church of San Nicolás, the pilgrim faces the second half of the day: a gradual climb towards the Sierra de Ligonde. The route passes through Gonzar and Castromaior, famous for its pre-Roman hillfort. The effort culminates in Ventas de Narón, a historic place of great medieval importance and a haven of calm, ideal for resting after a long day, surrounded by the purest Galician countryside.
