Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
This short and pleasant stage of the Calzada de los Blendios is a walk that combines the coast with the interior. Starting from the tourist Suances, the path moves away from the sea to venture into the Cántabrian countryside. The route is gentle, over a terrain of green hills and small villages. The journey ends in one of Spain's most beautiful villages: Santillana del Mar. Its medieval old town, perfectly preserved, with its stone houses and Romanesque Collegiate, is a time-traveling journey and an unbeatable cultural reward for the pilgrim.
The stage that unites Suances with Santillana del Mar is a short and culturally interesting journey. The route leaves the coast and beaches of Suances to venture into the undulating and green landscape of Cantabria's interior.
The route runs along quiet local roads and rural trails, passing through a mosaic of meadows and small villages. It's an enjoyable walk with no great difficulties, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of more rural Cantabria.
The main attraction of this stage is its destination: Santillana del Mar. Known as "the village of three lies" (it's neither saint nor plain nor has sea), it's one of Spain's best-conserved historic-artistic ensembles. Walking through its cobblestone streets is like going back to the Middle Ages. Its blazoned houses, defensive towers and above all, the Colegiata of Saint Julian, a jewel of Romanesque art, make Santillana an indispensable stop.
Given the stage's short distance, the pilgrim has plenty of time to calmly explore this wonderful village and visit, in its vicinity, the Altamira Cave, a replica exact of the original cave, considered the "Sixth Chapel" of rock art.
