Stage Description

This 22.2 km stage is an enjoyable stroll that brings the pilgrim to the city of Ourense. The route is mainly flat and downhill, passing through a rural landscape that gradually becomes more urban. The trail goes through small villages and follows the course of several rivers. The entrance to Ourense, "The City of Gold and Water", is an exciting moment. The city, Galicia's thermal capital, offers the pilgrim the unique opportunity to relax in its famous As Burgas baths or free pools by the River Miño. Additionally, its impressive cathedral and lively historic quarter make it a top-class cultural stop and resting place.
The 22.2 km journey from Xunqueira de Ambía to Ourense is a comfortable stage that serves as an introduction to one of the major cities on the Via de la Plata. The profile is very favorable, with a gentle and continuous descent into the valley of the River Miño.

The path starts in Xunqueira and traverses a rural landscape of fields and forests. It's an enjoyable walk, without technical difficulties, that allows for rapid progress. As you approach Ourense, the surroundings become increasingly populated and urban.

Entry to Ourense is made through the Seixalbo district, which preserves a beautiful historic quarter. After a final urban stretch, you arrive at the city center. Ourense, known as "Auria" by the Romans, is unique on the Camino for its thermal richness. Its hot springs, such as the famous Burgas in the heart of the historic center, flow at over 60 degrees. The pilgrim can enjoy a restorative bath in the numerous pools and baths located along the River Miño, an unforgettable experience.

In addition to its thermal aspect, Ourense boasts an important monumental heritage. Its Cathedral of St. Martin, with its spectacular Paradise Portal, the Roman Bridge over the Miño, and the lively atmosphere of its historic quarter ("Os Viños") make this city a mandatory stop and a perfect place to spend at least one full afternoon.
