Discover Gran San Bernardo

The Great St. Bernard Pass, at 2,473 meters of altitude, is the highest point and one of the most legendary and demanding milestones of the Francigena Way. This alpine pass that unites Switzerland with the Aosta Valley in Italy has been traversed since ancient times by armies, traders, and thousands of pilgrims. For the hiker, crowning the pass is an experience of overcoming and connecting with high mountain in its purest state, often with snow even in summer. At the summit is the famous Hospice, founded in the 11th century by Saint Bernard of Menthon to provide refuge for travelers. Regulated by Augustinian canons, it still offers hospitality today. The hospice is also the cradle of the famous St. Bernard dog breed, which were used for rescue in snow. Crossing this pass is a moment of deep connection with European pilgrimage history, a physical challenge rewarded with breathtaking scenery and warm welcome at one of Europe's most iconic locations.
