Discover Monasterio de Oseira

The Monastery of Santa María la Real de Oseira, nicknamed "The Galician Escorial" for its monumental grandeur, is one of the most impressive architectural and spiritual jewels of the Sanabrés Way. Located in a secluded valley in the province of Ourense, this Cistercian monastery has been a beacon of faith and culture since the 12th century. For the pilgrim who walks along the Via de la Plata, arriving at Oseira is an overwhelming experience, a meeting with silence, history, and art in its maximum expression. Its abbot's church, the spectacular chapter hall, and cloisters invite recollection and contemplation. The monastic community still inhabiting it keeps alive the spirit of hospitality, offering lodging in its hospice. Although it represents a small detour on some variants of the route, the visit is almost obligatory. It is a place where bodily fatigue is alleviated by the peace of the spirit, a stop that enriches deeply the pilgrimage and connects the walker with the long tradition of monasticism that protected and shaped the Way of St. James.
