Discover Oloron-Sainte-Marie

Oloron-Sainte-Marie, located at the confluence of the Aspe and Ossau rivers (gorges), is France's last great city and the gateway to the Pyrenees on the Via Tolosana. For pilgrims, this Bearnese town is a strategic stopover to prepare physically and mentally for the demanding crossing of the mountain range through the Somport Pass. The town has a rich heritage, divided between its three historic districts. Sainte-Marie Cathedral, in the ancient viscountcy of Oloron, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Way of St. James. Its Romanesque portico, with its intricate sculptures, is an authentic stone catechism. The Saint-Croix Church is another treasure of Romanesque architecture. Oloron-Sainte-Marie offers all necessary services for pilgrims, from hostels to specialty shops. It's a place to enjoy Bearnese cuisine and contemplate how the landscape becomes increasingly mountainous, feeling the imminent call of the great Pyrenean stage of the Way of St. James.
