Discover Puerto de Belate

The Belate Port is the last major mountainous challenge for the Baztán Pilgrim before descending into the Pamplona basin. This historic passage, often shrouded in mist (which gives it an air of mystery), has been a fundamental communication route since Roman times. For the walker, the ascent to Belate is one of the most demanding and authentic stages of the route. The path crosses impressive beech trees that create a magical atmosphere. At the top of the port are the ruins of the Monastery-Hospital of Santa María de Belate, founded in the 12th century to provide refuge for pilgrims facing harsh weather and the dangers of the road. Although only remnants remain today, the place is charged with Jacobean history. Crossing Belate is an experience of overcoming, solitude, and connection with wilder nature in the Navarre Pyrenees. It is the last major obstacle before seeing the plains that lead to Pamplona, an unforgettable milestone on the pilgrimage to Santiago.
