Discover Subiaco

Subiaco, a city in the valley of the River Aniene, is one of the most sacred places of Christianity and a fundamental stop on the Way of St. Benedict. It is considered the birthplace of Western monasticism. It was here that young Saint Benedict retired to a cave (the Holy Speco) to live as an eremite for three years. A monastery was subsequently built over this cave, one of the most spectacular in the world, the Monastery of St. Benedict, which appears to be hanging from the mountain wall and is decorated with impressive medieval frescoes. Nearby is the Monastery of Santa Scolastica, the oldest founded by the saint and the only one still preserved out of twelve created in the valley. For pilgrims, visiting Subiaco is a mystical experience, a journey to the origins of the Benedictine Rule "Ora et labora". The city offers a peaceful atmosphere and all necessary services. It combines breathtaking natural beauty with spiritual energy that has spread throughout Europe.
