Toulouse, the vibrant "Rose City" due to its brick color, is the great capital that articulates the Via Tolosana, the Jacobean route which is why it bears its name. For the pilgrim, arriving in Toulouse is one of the most significant experiences on the road in France. Its main landmark is the Basilica of Saint-Sernin (Saint Saturninus), one of the largest and most majestic Romanesque churches in the world, declared a World Heritage Site. Built to accommodate the crowds of pilgrims, its gallery and relics make it a spiritual center of first order. The city, bathed by the Garonne River, offers an exceptional heritage, with the Capitole (city hall and theater), the Jacobin Convent, and a lively old town.
