Discover Viterbo
Viterbo, known as the "City of Popes" for having been a papal seat in the 13th century, is the last major historical city on the Francigena Way before arriving at Rome. Its main attraction is its medieval quarter of San Pellegrino, considered the largest and best preserved in Europe, a maze of narrow streets, arches, towers, and characteristic houses with "profferlo" (external staircase). For pilgrims, walking through this neighborhood is an immersion into the Middle Ages. The Palace of the Popes, with its elegant loggia from where the first conclave was held, is the most important monument and a place of great historical resonance. Viterbo, surrounded by a solid wall, offers a tranquil atmosphere and a rich heritage. The city is also famous for its thermal waters (Terme dei Papi). With all the services for walkers, it's the perfect stop for a long rest and to prepare mentally for the final and exciting stages leading to St. Peter's tomb. It's the grand prologue to arriving at Eternal City.
