Stage 1: From Santiago de Compostela to Negreira (21,0 km)
The departure from the city is an urban walk that allows for one last look at the Cathedral. Soon, the asphalt gives way to dirt tracks that wind through gentle hills, oak and eucalyptus forests. The profile is constant scrambling, with no major difficulties but requiring a steady pace.
The highlight of the day is undoubtedly arriving at Ponte Maceira. This small nucleus is of extraordinary beauty. An imposing medieval five-arch bridge crosses the Tambre River, alongside a dam, a waterfall, and a set of watermills and a pazo. The place seems straight out of a story and is an obligatory stop for all pilgrims.
After Ponte Maceira, the path faces a final uphill climb before arriving in Negreira. This village, capital of the concello, is an important center of services, with a large range of hostels and restaurants. Its Pazo do Cotón, with its arches over the main street, and lively atmosphere, make it a perfect end to the stage.
Stage 2: From Negreira to Olveiroa (33,0 km)
The trail runs through a territory of great beauty but very sparsely populated. It passes through extensive forests of pines and eucalyptus, and it goes through small villages that seem frozen in time. The feeling of loneliness is constant, so this stage is ideal for introspection. It's crucial to plan the journey well, as there are few places to restock between Negreira and the end of the stage.
As the day progresses, the pilgrim ascends towards the plateau where Olveiroa sits. The views of the surrounding valleys and mountains are spectacular.
The arrival at Olveiroa is a relief and a pleasant surprise. This small village, which was almost abandoned, has been beautifully restored and today it's an example of traditional Galician architecture, with its stone houses, towers, and crossroads. Completely dedicated to pilgrims, it offers several hostels and restaurants, providing a cozy and authentic final stage in the midst of an unforgettable landscape.
Stage 3: From Olveiroa to Cee (19,0 km)
The first part is a pleasant stroll across the plateau, passing alongside Castrelo reservoir. The landscape is open and tranquil. But the magical moment of the day arrives in the descent towards Cee. From a known point called Cruceiro da Armada, the pilgrim suddenly finds himself with an impressive panoramic view: Corcubión Bay, Cape Finisterre, and the Atlantic Ocean stretching out to infinity. It's one of the most photographed and emotional moments on this route.
From there, a very pronounced and technical descent begins that takes the hiker from the plateau to sea level. The descent is demanding for the knees, but the constant views of the ocean ease the effort.
The path arrives in Cee, the largest settlement on the Costa da Morte and an important center of services. With its port, hospital, and lively commercial life, Cee offers the pilgrim everything they need. The stage usually ends in the neighboring and more picturesque Corcubión, just a kilometer away, with its historic quarter declared Historic-Artistic Ensemble. Both places are perfect for enjoying a marine atmosphere and a fresh seafood dinner.
Stage 4: From Cee to Finisterre (16,0 km)
The most notable section is the walk along the long and beautiful beach of Langosteira, an invitation to take off one's shoes and feel the sand and water of the Atlantic Ocean. After the beach, you arrive at the marina village of Fisterra (Finisterre), a fishing village with a bustling port and a welcoming atmosphere.
But the true end of the Camino is 3 kilometers from the village. A steep road ascends to Cape Finisterre, where the iconic lighthouse stands tall. This place, considered the "finis terrae" of ancient times, is a haven loaded with magic and symbolism. The tradition commands that pilgrims perform several rituals here: burning some clothing used on the Camino as a symbol of purification, collecting a shell from the beach as proof of arrival, and above all, sitting on the rocks to contemplate the sunset over the infinite ocean. It's a moment of deep introspection and emotion, the crowning glory of an unforgettable adventure. The visit to the milestone at kilometer 0.0 is the final photo of the journey.
Stage 5: From Finisterre to Muxía (0,0 km)
