Stage Description
Mountainous stage of the Primitive Way in the mountains of Lugo. The 24 km descend from A Fonsagrada (950 m altitude) to O Cádavo Baleira, crossing the Montes do Hospital with views of the Sierra do Ouribio. The route alternates forest tracks with traditional paths through oak and chestnut forests, with an undulating and demanding profile. O Cádavo is a small village in the region of Fonsagrada, a traditional crossroads in the mountains of Lugo.
The stage between A Fonsagrada and O Cádavo Baleira is an immersion into the deepest and most authentic Galicia. It traverses a half-mountain landscape with an undulating profile that demands constant effort. The route combines sections of local road with trails and dirt paths in a serene environment. The route departs from A Fonsagrada and passes through the village of Padrón, whose name evokes Jacobean tradition. The most significant and highest point on the journey is Montouto Hill. Near the summit are the remains of the Real Hospital of Pilgrims of Montouto, founded in the 14th century, a reminder of the difficulty of this route in the past. A Neolithic menhir ("a Pedra Dereita") adds an air of mystery. From the top, a long descent towards the valley begins. The landscape is dominated by green meadows, native forests and small livestock farms. The final stretch leads to O Cádavo, capital of Baleira's municipality. It is a small, elongated village aligned along the main road. Despite lacking a large monumental heritage, it offers pilgrims all necessary services for a good final stage.
