Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This stage joins two of the most impressive fortresses on ancient Nazari frontiers. Leaving behind the Mota Fortress in Alcalá la Real, the path enters a sea of olives, an iconic landscape of the province of Jaén. The profile is a continuous rise and fall over dirt tracks, demanding constant effort. The route traverses a rural and solitary environment, ideal for reflection. Arrival at Alcaudete, with its majestic Calatrava castle dominating the horizon, is the reward for a day immersed in history and Andalusian landscape.
Starting from the monumental Alcalá la Real, this stage of the Mozárabe Way is a journey through the history of borders and the Andalusian olive landscape. The journey is demanding, with a rugged profile that winds its way through the hills separating the provinces of Granada and Jaén. The path runs almost entirely on reddish-brown earth, surrounded by an ocean of olives that stretches as far as the eye can see. Solitude and silence are the companions of travel, offering a perfect space for introspection. It is an stage that requires good preparation, especially in the summer months, due to the scarcity of shade and water sources along the route. As the pilgrim advances, the silhouette of the impressive Alcaudete castle, of Calatrava origin, cuts out in the horizon, serving as a beacon and motivation for the final stretch of the walk. The arrival at this historic village is a great reward. Alcaudete offers a rich heritage, with its fortress, the church of Santa María la Mayor, and an enchanting old town. It's a perfect place to rest, enjoy local cuisine (especially its extra virgin olive oil) and replenish strength for the next stage.
