Stage Description

This is a long and demanding stage that dives right into the Manchegan plain. The route is almost flat, with long straights that cross a landscape of cereal fields and vineyards. The feeling of vastness and loneliness is constant. It's a day that puts the pilgrim's mental strength to the test, with few intermediate services and little shade. Arrival in Higueruela, a small agricultural town, is an oasis of rest after a day of effort and perseverance under La Mancha's sun, offering typical regional hospitality.
The stage from Almansa to Higueruela is one of the longest and most challenging sections on this part of the Levante Way, with a distance of 38.9 kilometers. The journey immerses the pilgrim in the vastness of the Manchegan plain, a landscape of open horizons and extensive fields of cultivation. The path starts from Almansa (712 m) and faces a false flat profile, with a progressive but constant ascent that accumulates more than 300 meters of positive elevation gain. The route runs on dirt tracks and agricultural roads, with long straight sections that can be monotonous and mentally demanding. The lack of shade and intermediate rest stops forces the pilgrim to plan very well the journey, carrying sufficient water and sun protection. Although the landscape is austere, it has its own beauty, with the reddish earth and blue sky as main characters. The arrival in Higueruela (1030 m), a small village located on an alpine plateau, is a well-deserved reward for the effort. Its church of Santa Quiteria and the kindness of its people offer a cozy refuge. It's an stage that defines the experience of walking through La Mancha: a test of endurance and solitude that strengthens the pilgrim's spirit.
