Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This stage continues through the Manchegan high plateau, on a long but gentle route that was less demanding than the previous day's journey. The landscape remains dominated by fields of cultivation and wind farms. The road is solitary and invites reflection. The greatest highlight of the day is arriving at the historic town of Chinchilla de Montearagón. Its impressive castle, main square, and cave houses offer a monumental final stage. The views from the hill where the village sits are spectacular, a balcony over La Mancha.
The stage from Higueruela to Chinchilla de Montearagón is a 29.3 km journey that crosses the Albatecine high plain. The route starts at Higueruela (1030 m) and follows a mostly descending profile, with some undulations, making it more bearable than the previous stage. The road runs on dirt tracks and rural roads, surrounded by a landscape of cereal fields and wind farms that have become a symbol of La Mancha. It is a solitary walk, ideal for introspection and enjoying the sense of vastness offered by the plateau. Along the route, small towns like Hoya-Gonzalo are passed through, offering points of rest. The arrival at Chinchilla de Montearagón (900 m) is spectacular. This historic village, declared a Historic-Artistic Ensemble, rises over a hill that dominates the plain. Its imposing Arab origin castle, walls, Plaza Mayor with medieval layout and cave houses form a monumental ensemble of great beauty. The views from the castle are impressive. It's an stage that rewards effort with a history-loaded finale, art, and unforgettable panoramas.
