Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
First stage of the Via Bayonne, historical route that links Bayonne (France) with the French Way via Pamplona or the Inland Basque Way via Vitoria. The 26 km run along the French Basque coast until the border crossing at Behobia. The route follows the Atlantic coast via Anglet, Biarritz, Bidart, Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Hendaye before entering Spanish territory via Irun. Border stage with coastal scenery and Basque cultural heritage on both sides of the border.
The last stage of the English Way is a long journey that takes the pilgrim from the interior of A Coruña province to the destination in Santiago de Compostela. The profile is a continuous "breakneck" slope, an up and down constant through a rural landscape of great beauty. The route runs on dirt paths and tranquil local roads, passing by several small villages. The most important locality on the route is Sigüeiro, by the Tambre River. It is the last major stop before Santiago and a good place for rest. From Sigüeiro onwards, the path faces its final stretch, which includes the passage through the industrial area of Tambre, the least attractive part of the route. Overcome this stretch, the path enters the neighborhoods of Santiago. The excitement increases as it approaches the historic center. The entry into the Praza do Obradoiro and the view of the Cathedral is the end of the Camino, the culmination of an unforgettable journey.
