Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
The Way of St. James enters the heart of the Asturian mining basins. The route descends through the Caudal valley, a landscape marked by industrial history and reconversion. The profile of this stage is much more favorable, with a progressive descent that allows for a more relaxed walk. Passes through towns such as Pola de Lena, an important service center in the region. Arrival at Mieres del Camino, a village with a deep mining legacy, offers the pilgrim a view of industrial and working Asturias, a contrast to the rural landscape of previous days.
After the effort of the mountain, the stage from Bendueños to Mieres del Camino offers a much more gentle profile, descending through the valleys of the Copper Basins. The landscape changes dramatically, and the summits give way to an environment marked by the industrial history of Asturias.
The path follows the course of the Lena River and, subsequently, the Caudal. It passes through Pola de Lena, the capital of the concejo and a significant urban center with all services. It is a good place for a stop and restocking.
The alternative route takes sections along fluvial trails with sectors that run through more urbanized areas, reflecting the density of population in this region. The pilgrim can observe the remnants of the past mining: castles, old railway lines and working-class neighborhoods, which contrast with the green Asturian landscape that refuses to disappear.
The arrival at Mieres del Camino, or simply Mieres, immerses the pilgrim in one of the most representative villages of Spain's mining history. Its industrial heritage, monuments to miners, and lively atmosphere make it an interesting final stage. It is a journey to understand the social and economic history of Asturias, a cultural complement to the natural experience of the mountain.
